So you need systems in your business. And there are five systems. Number one is leadership. That's everything that you do to communicate your vision to your team and to everybody involved. Number two is marketing. That's everything that you do to attract prospects to your business. Third is sales. And that is converting those prospects into paying customers. And then fourth is service or operations, everything you do to serve your clients, patients, guest members, whatever. And then administration is tracking all those stats, and keeping all that organized. So when you have system simple systems and all those areas, you can duplicate yourself, you can hire other people with a simple process, a simple checklist, a simple job description, several policies and procedures, and train them on those things and train them to use a system.

Hey, it's Pete and welcome to another edition of the simplifying entrepreneurship podcast. It's this series designed to provide the tips and tools that will help you cut through the chaos and create the clarity that will transform your business and life as a leader. After all, running a business isn't rocket science, you just need the frameworks and tools to help you get there. And my guest today has a lot of those he leads. Ziegler incorporation the whole side of Zig Ziegler's leadership programs and coaching programs and all that he is Howard Partridge, and Howard's gonna talk to us today about his latest book. And he's going to get into all of the things around the idea of stop being a slave to your business and transform it into a predictable profitable turnkey operation. So I'm going to leave it up to him as we get into our conversation with Howard Partridge.

01:57

Howard, welcome to the simplifying entrepreneurship podcast. Thanks so much for joining me today. It's my pleasure. Thanks for having me. We just met a couple of weeks ago on another podcast, another sort of webinar series, I really wanted to get you on today to talk about stop being a slave to your business and transform it into the predictable profitable turnkey operation all around your book, all that great stuff. So happy to have you on You bet. It's my pleasure. So when we look at the idea of having a turnkey business, what does a turnkey business mean? For those that don't understand it, it means that you can simply do whatever it is you want to do when you want to do it and your business runs itself. That's really what it means. I know the technical term on Google or Webster's or whatever is that you can take a key and open the door and everything runs, I like to look at it as a vehicle. Because the one only reason your business exists is to be a vehicle to help you achieve your life goals. So if you think about a vehicle that has all of these systems, you know, you just need a key to go as long as you know how to drive. And, you know, you just need a key. And that vehicle as long as it has gas in it and it's in good working order, then it should take you where you want to go. That's what a turnkey businesses is one that runs without you. Yeah, I love that. And I mean, I think doesn't every owner want to have a business that runs without them. Another one of the guys, I know Ari, myself puts it in a framework and he says, to become a replaceable founder, where you're actually being replaceable in your own business. And the people are elevating underneath you having the systems, all of the different the people, the systems, all that stuff. What are those different areas that make a turnkey business happen, Howard? Well, before I get into the actual systems, what I'd like to do is I'd like to ask the audience a question and think about exactly what you just said. And that is that every small business owner dreams about that, but they think that it's a fantasy, they think it's just a dream. And so I want to ask the audience, first of all, why did you go into business for yourself to start with? Was it to make a lot of money? Or was it really to be your own boss to chart your own course I have a little more free time, right? Well, the brutal reality for most small business owners lives is you feel like a slave to the business. Very little family time business consumes your mind. 24 seven major stress, no role freedom. You feel like you have a job instead of a business in your day is consumed putting out brushfires and most small business owners that I talked to can relate to that. I can relate to that because that was me and I started my first business 36 and a half years ago, and for the first 13 years, that was the reality for me. I work 24 hours a day, seven days a week and in 1997 I started

Hearing this thing about systems, you got to add systems in your business. And I began to learn the secrets of a phenomenal business the secrets of getting your business turnkey. So the first thing to understand is that you got to be clear on your life goals. I think a lot of people don't grow in their business, they don't get their business turnkey, because they're not really clear on what they would do. I knew what I would do if I had a turnkey business, and most people don't, because they don't believe that they don't even go down that road. So the first thing to think about is to think about your life, how many hours a week do you work? You know, what is your lifestyle? How much money do you want to make, how much time you spend with your family, and all those kinds of good questions. So that's step one. Step two, is to understand that every time you have to recreate something every time you have to tell somebody a second time, or a third time or fourth time what to do that involves you. So you need systems in your business. And there are five systems. Number one is leadership. That's everything that you do to communicate your vision to your team, and to everybody involved. Number two is marketing is everything that you do to attract prospects to your business. Third is sales. And that is converting those prospects into paying customers. And then fourth is service or operations, everything you do to serve your clients, patients, gas members, whatever. And then administration is tracking all those stats, and keeping all that organized. So when you have system simple systems and all those areas, then you can duplicate yourself, you can hire other people with a simple process, a simple checklist, a simple job description, several policies and procedures, and train them on those things and train them to use a system. You know, one of the vehicles that I like to use as an example is an airplane. Every airplane in the sky operates from a simple checklist. There's a pre flight checklist, there's a taxi checklist, there's a there are checklists, now the pilot has training, the pilot has been trained, the pilot maybe probably moved up, you know, from flight school to lower levels on up to phenomenal pilot with experience. But that's how you have to look at your business. Otherwise, you're going to have to always be involved. So you need to have systems, you also need to have people and you need to understand how to be a leader. But those are two subjects for another time.

07:40

Those are like 10 podcasts each right? Yeah, that's right.

07:44

Well, I appreciate all of that. I mean, there's some great stuff there systems and frameworks are just so important to running a successful business, aren't they they're really, really are. And with the stuff that you do with all of the different things I know you've you've had, you know, seven or eight different books out now. And you're a big part of Ziegler incorporation, and all the training through there and all the coaching through there. I'm sure there's just a ton of different frameworks and things that guide people through this process and make it more simple for them. Right. My story is that again, I felt like a slave to my business. And in 1997, I learned about systems. And I saw for the first time that I could have a turnkey business. And I was excited about that. And I believed it. And that's the thing is that one of the things I teach people is that people do what people see in their minds. And Zig Ziglar said that the number one ingredient of success is desire. And desire comes from a vision. But the reason that people don't have a vision is because they don't have belief. They don't believe it. People who know me, some of them still don't believe it. I have neighbors who are like, well, don't you work? Well, of course I work but you don't have to be at your business. No, it's turnkey. I have a team. But it didn't start out that way. And so I was literally a slave to that business. I learned these secrets that it took a long time to get all the people in place, get the systems in place. But because of the fact that I did that I got my business turn key. I then started coaching other small business owners on how to do the same thing. In 2008. I had Mr. Zig Ziglar come and speak at one of my conferences. He came along with Tom his son, his daughter, Julie, and Tom and I built a relationship together and I became the exclusive coaching company for Ziegler and for all of their clients. We have members in 20 different countries and over 100 different industries. And then we have a whole coaching certification that we do on the Ziggler side. And through that relationship and through using the systems that I created to help the Ziggler organization improve their business and I help Tom run that

company. So today what we do is we do business training and coaching. So that we can help people learn the proven systems and implement those systems because you can know them, but not implement them. And then when it comes down to the implementing, I know that one of your previous books that you had, I believe it was FTI. And it was around the idea of failure to implement. So why don't we talk a little bit about that? You bet. So the number one reason that people don't reach their biggest dreams and goals, is not because of a lack of time a lack of anything other than what I said a second ago, they don't have the desire because they don't have the vision and the vision because they don't believe. And so we have to change the principles that we live by. And so in that book, I share, of course, why we don't implement. The truth is you can learn what you need to learn, we live in a world today that you can learn anything, but just because you know, it doesn't mean that you're going to implement it. So that desire has to be there, that belief has to be there, that vision has to be there. And one of the reasons that I discovered through Ziggler, really, is that most human beings suffer from a poor self image. Business owners don't see themselves as a leader, why couldn't I couldn't have a bunch of employees and you can't find good people and, man, they'll still me blind and and I just, I can't, I can't, I can't, I can't. The first principle in that book is what I call the potential principle. how you see yourself dramatically impacts your performance at the end of the day. It's about performance. It's about personal performance. It's about systems performance. It's about leadership performance. It's about dream team performance. Now, if I had a team that was not performing, then I would have to do some coaching. In fact, many years ago, I had to fire my general manager, and my bookkeeper because we're supposed to be turnkey, yet I am involved having to be involved and fix things because they weren't following the system. When you create a system that works. You just follow that system. We don't decide to build an airplane without wings, just because we don't feel like building the wings. You know, it's not going anywhere. Without the engines. It's not, you know, there are those parts, as you and I have learned through business made simple is that you got those parts of the airplane that have to be operational? Sure do, and you can't have any of them out of proportion, right? That's the other thing or else it's not going to fly properly. That's right. Well, I think that's a great place to end our conversation here today, Howard, and really appreciate the time you spent with me and just love having this chat today. But some really great stuff. For those that are interested in getting a hold of you getting in touch or maybe picking up your book, The five secrets to a phenomenal business are one of the other ones. How do they do that, just go to my website, www.HowardPartridge.com and just download our free resources, you'll get free business building tips, you'll get one of my books for free. We'll invite you to different webinars and events. And you can get on the track of building what I call a predictable profitable turnkey operation so that you can live your phenomenal dream life. That's awesome. A great way to end. And thanks again, so much. It's been a pleasure. And I appreciate your time here today. My pleasure, Pete, thank you for having me.

13:42

Well, I hope you enjoyed my conversation with Howard here today. Thanks for spending some time with us and think about how you can apply today's topics of simplifying entrepreneurship around all of those things of making your business a turnkey operation so much to think about there. And you know what it's really and truly what every entrepreneur and leader wants to elevate delegate, bring people ahead so that they can move on and do other things that are really exciting. And roll through the things that lead your business so it can grow and survive and thrive. We talked a little bit about that you had a dream when you started this, you know, maybe it was to make some money, be your own boss, chart, your own course, have more free time, whatever the case was, are you getting there? And are you using the systems those critical systems that Howard talked about? The brutal reality of most businesses is that a lot of entrepreneurs have very little time they're stressed out there's not a lot of real freedom. What are you going to do right after this episode to steer your business so that they can provide you the life of your dreams. So hopefully you enjoyed the episode here today. If you did, please share it with your friends. Invite them to listen and subscribe to the podcast so they can hear future episodes. Really appreciate that.
